Many companies and organizations are just now realizing the importance of sustainability management for the continued growth of business and industry. At Reed & Witting Company, we have been using sustainable practices long before they became popular. It is one of our core values. Below you will find some of the practices that have been built into our everyday workflow:

Reed & Witting has always maintained an ethical and responsible philosophy to our employees, customers and vendors, as well as towards the community in which we live. With FSC© certification, we have taken that one step further and included the world in our scope of responsible business practices. We believe that for the graphics arts to remain a strong and viable industry we must, as manufacturers, be cognizant of both the current and future use of our resources. The FSC© gives us the ability to help secure that future for our industry.

Our customers are beginning to realize this fact as well, and now have the opportunity to promote the use of FSC© products through our Chain of Custody Certification. Even though we are not direct manufacturers of wood products - we use them extensively (paper and paper board) in the production of our finished product.

FSC© Chain of Custody certification provides information about where the wood (or other forest-based material used in a product) comes from, or does not come from. It requires us to identify the origin of raw materials used in FSC-certified© products, to keep FSC-certified© products separate from other products throughout the production process, and to allow their tracking from one operation to the next - from the forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing and distribution. Only operations covered by an FSC© CoC certificate are allowed to label products with the FSC© trademarks.

The FSC© label thus provides the link between responsible production and consumption and enables the consumer to make socially and environmentally responsible purchasing decisions.

Education is the key to success, and it also brings everyone up to speed with FSC©. Most of the procedures that need to be done are taken care of by Reed & Witting. There are some pieces that we do need your involvement in.

In accordance with FSC© guidelines, here are the following procedures Reed & Witting abides by:

  1. When you quote with Reed & Witting please specify that you would like an FSC© paper. This way we can start the process for getting your project FSC© certified
  2. We do ask that you fill out a Customer Request Form to start the paper work for your FSC© project
  3. To use the FSC© logo one must complete a Reed & Witting FSC© Information form upon order confirmation. It contains the data required for Reed & Witting to proceed with the order and supply the necessary documentation needed to secure the proper approvals for FSC© logo and claims usages.

Logo Approval Process

The CoC Administrator shall do calculations to ascertain the type and the copy of the label that is to be used on the product and will advise the prepress department what type of art is to be used. The prepress department will insert the proper logo and specifics into the artwork. A PDF proof is to be made of the page (or panel) that the logo appears on and forwarded to the CoC Administrator. The PDF should be of high enough resolution that the logo and all components of the FSC© label are easily readable. The CoC Administrator will submit the PDF to the governing FSC© organization to obtain authorization to use the logo as submitted. The balance of the proofing process will continue as normal, with proofs being supplied to the client with the logo and corresponding components in place. Any changes to the logo or components of the logo must be re-submitted for approval. Once FSC© approval is received, the CoC Administrator shall scan the approval document into the job record and file the original within the job jacket. We are not to make plates or print until FSC© approval has been granted. This process usually take less than a day, however, it may take up to 2 days depending on job specifics and backlog at the approval center.

As a G7 Master Printer, our tight calibration has allowed us to reduce the amount of make-readies needed to be produce in order to match proofs. This saves tons of paper that would otherwise be wasted. While this waste is recycled, it is better to not generate that waste in the first place. This also reduces total energy and ink consumption.

We also reuse our make-ready sheets during initial setup, in order to cut down on the amount of virgin paper that is consumed. This allows us to utilize our materials in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner.


We use low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC's) inks in order to keep our work environment healthy and also to minimize our impact on the environment. Our press room uses a consignment-based ink inventory system. This allows us to reduce waste ink as well as the total poundage of ink ordered and stored on site.


Employed only when absolutely necessary, the solvents we use are low in VOCs. Fortunately, through our practices and the efficiencies of our Heidelberg XL 105 press, they are only used sparingly. We are also an alcohol free shop. This has decreased the amount of VOC's that are released and keeps the amount of waste produced to a minimum.

The wash cycle on our press is automated, decreasing the amount of press wash solution used in cleaning and an contributes to our overall minimization of waste. All waste that is produced is properly captured and disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.


As an industry and a company, recycling has been a core of our business. We recycle all waste paper, used printing plates and spent toner cartridges. Our paper waste, when large enough, is used in the office as note paper, allowing us to directly recycle within our own facility. Local is better!

We use cloth rags during clean up instead of disposable paper towels, eliminating the solid waste that is sent to landfill and helping to reduce the creation of hazardous waste that the improper disposal of absorbed shop fluids can create.


Using a capacitor in our plant has helped to cut down our consumption of electricity, which keeps our plant green. By utilizing this single piece of equipment that functions much like a huge battery we are able to more efficiently use electricity which fits into our sustainability mission statement. Trying to keep paper and ink usage to a minimum, as well as the fuel and environmental costs of delivery, we make electronic proofs via PDF available for all of our customers. Of course we can always provide a hard copy when requested.

Customer Service

Through our new web to print and print on demand systems, we make it possible for customers to print only what they need, when they need it. By giving you the ability to eliminate standing inventory, we can not only help to reduce your overall costs, but lessen the impact on the environment. One added benefit is that our customers have instant access to printed material via our web based ordering system and can usually have any stored amount shipped within 24 hours of the order being placed.

Our web to print application allows customers to upload, review, approve and order their projects online, reducing the amount of paper work and physical proofs that are usually required to process and order.
